In the digitized world many organizations experience a large flow of information. To sort and manage all the information can be difficult. Individuals may experience a phenomenon called ?Information overload?, due to the fact that the information flow is too extensive. There are various reasons why individuals are affected by this phenomenon.

Information overload is by no means a new concept, but has come to prominence the last decade. A generally accepted definition of the phenomenon does not exist. The main question in this master thesis is how to define Information overload in order to create a connotative concept for information science. This thesis reviews the nature and causes of Information overload, and considers possible solutions, both individual and technical, and their relevance to the information professional. The review of the results shows that researchers seldom or never give a legible definition of what the concept information holds.

With the volume and availability of information increasing as fast as technological development in society a phenomenon called Information overload has emerged. The purpose of our thesis was to investigate how university students experience this increase in volume and ease in access to information. In our study we concentrated our focus on the student?s use of electronic resources. So as not to prejudice our study group our questions focused on different aspects of searching for information.

This paper deals with the concept "Information overload" (IO). It describes the intellectualcontent of the idea as well as its supposed domains of activity. Furthermore it problemizes theimage of "Information", "Information Society" and other concepts related to those phenomenons.A division by two fundamental different distinctions of IO are being made. Information overload occurs when the amount of information exceeds the individual s capacity to efficiently process and use the information available. In this situation information instead of being an asset becomes a load. This interview study deals with college students experiences of Information overload when working on their thesis. Focus lies on use of Internet based information resources. The main result was that the students experienced Information overload in specific situations and steps of the process.

Information overload är ett stort problem, många organisationer lider av dess konsekvenser och medvetenheten om dessa problem är hög. Ändå så finns problemet kvar, och verkar bli alltmer påtagligt. I följande uppsats ämnar vi att presentera varför detta är så, genom ett arbete kring sambandet mellan organisationers medvetenhet om Information overload och de åtgärder som vidtas mot problemet. För att åstadkomma detta har vi genomfört kvalitativa intervjuer med informanter för att komma till kärnan av denna problematik. Det vi fann var att trots att organisationerna är väl medvetna om fenomenet och problemen förknippade med det så var bara en del av de tillgängliga åtgärderna vidtagna, och det som faktiskt var gjort var av en begränsad karaktär.

I det moderna informationssamhället vi lever i, har tillgången till informations- och kommunikationsteknologin ökat och det har aldrig varit så enkelt att förmedla och ta emot information som det är idag. Detta har till stor del underlättat inom arbetslivet då det globala avståndet minskar och vi har möjlighet att arbeta från ett flertal olika platser. Däremot kan den andra sidan av myntet innebära att vi tar emot mer information än vad vi har förmåga till att hantera och detta kan medföra att vi blir överbelastade. När informationen transformeras till någonting negativt och påfrestande brukar man säga att individen har drabbats av fenomenet Information overload. Ett närbesläktat fenomen till detta är det så kallade Interaction overload där man, till skillnad från Information overload, uppmärksammar interaktionen som individen utsätts för.Arbetsmailen är ett vanligt kommunikationsverktyg inom företag och genom denna finns en risk att drabbas av både Information overload och Interaction overload.

Information overload förekommer på alla arbetsplatser där informationsbearbetning är viktigt för arbetsprocesserna. I vissa fall kan Information overload medföra allvarliga konsekvenser både för den enskilda medarbetaren och för verksamheten i stort. På akutmottagningen på Centrallasarettet i Växjö har sjuksköterskorna en viktig roll som samordnare av den information som används i patientarbetet. Syftet med denna undersökning är att undersöka vilka faktorer som främst orsakar Information overload hos sjuksköterskorna på akutmottagningen CLV, samt att undersöka hur fenomenet IO påverkar vårdkvaliteten.Under mars och april 2007 genomfördes intervjuer med sju sjuksköterskor på den aktuella akutmottagningen utifrån en frågemall som utformats med hjälp av aktuell forskning på Information overload. Resultatanalysen skedde utifrån en specifik orsakstabell som tagits från en litteratursammanställning av Eppler och Mengis (2004).

Antalet intranät växer ständigt, samtidigt som allt fler människor känner att de inte kan ta till sig all den information som de erhåller. Intranäten innehåller en mängd användbar information som alla anställda kan ta del av. För att kunna använda intranätet effektivt krävs det att användarna sorterar bland all den information som finns på intranätet. Med hjälp av användarprofiler kan detta ske på ett enkelt sätt. Syftet med detta arbete var att behandla frågan om användarprofiler kan bidra till att bättre beslut tas genom att Information overload reduceras.

Today it is common to state that we are living in an Information overloaded society. But there are many different definitions of what can be said to constitute Information overload and there is a lack of substantial research on the subject. Conclusions in the available literature on Information overload are often drawn on anecdotal evidence and carries a dramatized picture of the causes and effects of the phenomenon.With the tools of discursive analysis this two years master?s thesis explores how the phenomenon Information overload is portrayed in six popular science books that deals with the subject: Alvin Toffler (1970) Future Shock, Orrin Klapp (1986) Overload and Boredom, Richard Wurman (1989) Information Anixety, Andrew Keen (2007) The cult of the amateur, Maggie Jackson (2008), Distracted and Nicholas Carr (2010) The Shallows. The result of the analysis shows that there is a common discourse of how the subject of Information overload is represented, which stretches in and between the books intertextually.

Over the last 25 year IT development has greatly influenced the waycompanies are managed, the tremendous growth in the information society has made a huge amount of information extremely accessible. This has resulted in the problem of Information overload where the large amount of information can affect the quality of a decision basis collected by a controller.The purpose of the study is to examine how a controller is affected by Information overload and how this influences the decision basis. We intend to highlight the important elements to represent a high quality of information.A survey was conducted through a case study within a global affiliated company in the packaging industry. An adductive approach has been applied with a qualitative research method. Collected empirical material from interviews has been put into relation with existing theories.The case study indicates that there is no relationship between the problem of Information overload and flawed decision basis.

Det råder inte heller några tvivel om att vår användning av sociala medier mer eller mindre påverkar våra medvetna beslut och vår kommunikation. Information overload är inget nytt begrepp, och i dagens informationssamhälle är det inte bara massmedia som står för den informationsspridning som sköljer över befolkningen utan de är själva delaktiga i att skapa den enorma mängd information och kommunikation de tar del av varje dag.

At nuclear power plants, electrical valve actuators are important for ensuring that the reactor core is water covered and the pressure in the reactor tank and containment is limited. The electrical actuators are provided with overload protection in case of drawing higher current then the motors are rated for. When safety manoeuvres are needed, the overload protection must not trig and cause the valve to stop before completing the manoeuvre. Analyses have showed that the current settings of the overload protection may cause an illegitimate trig at the worst theoretically possible accident. A new method has been developed with conservative assumptions and applies overload protections for all electrical valve actuators at the three reactors in Forsmark..

AbstractPurpose/Aim: In my essay I study the use of Internet with Information overload as my perspective. I compare two age groups in order to find out whether there is a difference between generations in how they use the Internet and experience the vast amount of information that is found on the net.Material/Method: I gather information from six frequent World Wide Web users to find out whether they are experiencing Information overload when using the Internet in their spare time and how they structure and make sense of the vast amount of information that is found on the net. I use semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative, not quantitative, material for my study. I have also used literature and websites on Information overload, the Internet, and connected themes in order to get a broader picture of the subject and help me analyse the material.Main results: The main results of my study are that frequent Internet users do not feel that they suffer from the vast amount of information found on the World Wide Web. They rather enjoy it and if they have heard the term Information overload they assume that it does not apply to their use of the Internet.

Informationsmängden har i och med Internets utveckling accelererat, vilket påverkar klimatet på många arbetsplatser. Det fenomen som uppstår när en individ får svårigheter att hantera informationen brukar kallas ?Information overload?. Särskilt i informationsintensiva miljöer finns en risk att informationsmängden kan orsaka Information overload. Huvudsyftet med studien var att öka kunskapen om hur informationsmängden upplevs, hur den hanteras och hur den påverkar arbetsprestationen för individer på ett informationsintensivt företag.
